My Community Engagement Experience

I am grateful to get an opportunity to be part of community engagement at Lotus Petal Secondary School. It was one of the most meaningful and eye-opening experiences of my life. By interacting with the young minds from different backgrounds and contributing in small but in an impactful manner has given me chance to get out of my comfort zone. When I first began, I was filled with mixed emotions of being excited and nervous. I also wanted to make a difference, but I wasn’t sure how to connect with the students or support them effectively.

My inhibitions slowly faded as I started to interact with the students. The energy, curiosity, and warmth showcased by students made it easier for me to open up and engage. I had led yoga sessions and singing games for students in Grades 3 and 4, which helped in creating a fun and interactive environment for the students and they thoroughly enjoyed it. I also conducted age-appropriate English lessons that focused on how they can improve their vocabulary and basic grammar skills. These students were eager to learn and participate, which made the teaching process incredibly rewarding for me.

One of the most beautiful aspects of my community engagement journey was introducing Madhubani painting, a traditional art form from Bihar. Watching the students explore their creativity through colors and patterns was heartwarming. It not only helped them learn about Indian culture but also gave them an opportunity to express themselves freely in unique ways.

Another major part of my volunteering was teaching basic financial concepts like the barter system, money, saving, and investing. I had designed games and simple activities for the students to make these lessons more practical, engaging and fun. Through these sessions, I realized how powerful interactive learning can be. It also sparked curiosity in the students and helped them in understanding how the world around them works. It also gave me a chance to improve my communication, planning, and leadership skills.

Through this experience, I learned valuable life lessons, especially the importance of empathy, patience, and adaptability. It showed me how even small acts of kindness and involvement can bring big changes in someone’s life. I also became more aware of my own privileges and responsibilities. Seeing the students’ determination, smiles, and resilience despite their daily challenges made a deep impact on me. Their strength inspired me to reflect on myself and become more grateful, humble, and compassionate. Community engagement is not just about helping others—it’s about learning, growing, and creating human connections.
